Extraction of Logs in Forestry Using Operations Research and Geographical Information Systems

چکیده
An important and so far much neglected operative problem in the Swedish forestry is to extract roundwood from actual harvest areas to load points at forest roads. Once at the load point, logging trucks can collect it for further secondary transportation to sawand pulp-mills. We report on a system being developed which collects geographic information by a global positioning system (GPS) about logpiles and actual routing network used by the forwarder. This is stored together with related information in a geographical information system (GIS). Using operations research (OR) techniques we can nd high quality routes. This provides the driver with an operative tool in nding routes. We give numerical results from a case study done for a major Swedish forest company.

Modelling bryophytes distribution pattern using environmental parameters of Iran in Geographical Information Systems (GIS): a case study of three genera Tortula, Grimmia and Bryum (Bryophyta)
In the present study, a modelling approach based on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) analysis is presented with the aim of identifying the influence of environmental parameters on three genera, namely, Tortula, Grimmia and Bryum as representatives of Iranian bryoflora. By using ArcGIS Desktop, we produced a model for environmental variables include altitude, precipitation, temperature and...
متن کاملExamining the Optimal Bucking Method to Maximize Profits in Commercial Thinning Operations in Nasunogahara Area, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan
Optimal bucking methods were applied to two operational sites of the Nasu-machi Forest Owners’ Co-operative to maximize profits, with and without taking log size into consideration, and to maximize revenues considering a new subsidy system and higher unit prices of smallsized logs. Corresponding optimum extraction rates and small-sized log prices were examined. Extraction rates from stands usin...
متن کاملEstimating the Position of the Harvester Head – a Key Step towards the Precision Forestry of the Future?
Modern harvesters are technologically sophisticated, with many useful features such as the ability to automatically measure stem diameters and lengths. This information is processed in real time to support value optimization when cutting stems into logs. It can also be transferred from the harvesters to centralized systems and used for wood supply management. Such information management systems...

Land use planning for land management using the geographic information system (GIS) in the Loumir watershed of Guilan province in northern Iran
Land use planning is a science that determines the type of land use through studying the ecological character of the land as well as its socio-economic structure. It is possible to plan for the appropriate use of the land and to enhance the present management of the land use by utilizing Geographical Information System (GIS). To this end, our investigators identified and took steps toward devel...
